Philosophy of Social Justice
Lashell Nathaniel
Social Justice High School was not a choice for me. I had to attend this school because it was my neighborhood school. I can honestly say I do not regret that I attended this high school at all. I have learned so many things at this school that I know I would have never been taught at a predominantly African American school - not just educationally - culturally as well. Social Justice taught me that I can be a leader in life; moreover, it also showed me that I must follow before I can lead.
Many people ask me “Why do you go to that school in that neighborhood with all those Mexicans?” I used to just reply, “oh because it’s my neighborhood school, and I had to go there.” However, now my answer is “it’s a school that does not neglect any of its students, it’s a school that provides many opportunities, it’s a school that can relate to who I am and what I have been through, it’s a school that knows my struggles, it’s a school that can help me become a better person for myself and others around me.
Social Justice is – freedom - in my own one word definition. The reason why I say it is freedom is because we all want to be treated as equals and have the same opportunities as one another as long as we work hard for them. In reality all we want is freedom. We all want to become someone in life and not be misjudged just by the color of our skin, but instead on how hard we work. For example not all Latinos have social security numbers but those who do, and of course those who don’t do not just want to be confined by nine digits and let that determine what their next step will be in life after high school.
Our class went through getting our illegally fired teachers back. Who are these people to come in our school and fire our teachers who has been teaching us for three years for no apparent reason? That really hurt our feelings, and made us feel like Social Justice was really crumbling. Some techniques that kept us alive were striving and believing in what was right, the same way the Hunger Strikers did not give up on our school. It was the same way we could not give up on it either. We had to work together and believe.
I imagine contributing to the struggle by giving my all to school and walking across that stage. I want to show that I did it and I rose above the struggle. My Fire Project issue is HIV/Aids and focuses on how income level is connected to a social issue.
